360 degree ventilation in a closed sneaker? No lie fam. Adidas Originals brought back the Climacool trainer last year and I got my hands on the updated 2017 model in a sweet White/Gum colorway. Is this technically the best summer sneaker ever? Read on to find out.
The Adidas Climacool series was born in 2002 and aimed to create the ultimate in breathable performance footwear and featured shoes made for running, basketball and even tennis. Check out this cool commercial they did, complete with a Marilyn Monroe moment! However, this series is often overlooked as compared to the Equipment series, or the Torsion series, probably due to the futuristic looks and use of non-traditional materials but that kind of design geared toward a solid goal, breathability in this case, is what makes them so attractive to me. The Coca Cola collab, made for the 2002 World Cup is easily the most notable version of the sneaker although its cult status ensures that versions from the early 2000s are sought after, especially in European circles.
The upper is basically comprised of mesh and PU. A well ventilated PU cage on the medial and lateral sides, featuring the three stripe design separates the toebox from the quarter. Though it may look bulky, this a very light sneaker with plenty of padding.
If you’ve seen the older Climacool the first difference you’ll notice here is the use of a tighter mesh with smaller holes as opposed to the open mesh used earlier. I get a strong concept car vibe from these, almost as much as these (lol). It’s probably because the vents on the heel look like exhaust ports. I can’t really tell if air actually flows out that way but true to the label, adiprene in the forefoot does add some spring to your step. Overall the silhouette is quite narrow and due to the plastic bits at the heel and toe, I advise going up a full size.
This PU strip at the toe does a good job protecting the mesh from door and cupboard edges and has 001 inscribed on it.
If there were any more vents on this thing, it’d be a sandal. This is the ultimate summer sneaker for haters of open footwear (like me). Great shape, polarising looks and functional tech that you can feel – what more can you ask for in a sneaker? Can’t go wrong with white and gum but f you aren’t a big fan of this colorway, Adidas Originals has some really dope ones out, including this beautiful ZX inspired colorway. I’ve spent a couple of days in these in Delhi’s 45 degree afternoons, mostly walking around for shoots, and I can attest to the fact that these are among the most breathable kicks I’ve ever worn. You wouldn’t want to step in a puddle wearing these though.
